Once the capital of British Columbia, New Westminster was crowned the "Royal City" by Queen Victoria in 1860.  At the time depicted here, Columbia Street was sometimes referred to as the "Golden Mile", the bustling business, shopping and entertainment centre of the City and surrounding areas.  The BC Electric depot at 8th & Columbia played an important role in bringing people in and out of the city by bus or Interurban tram, the latter connecting New Westminster to Vancouver and much of the Fraser Valley.  A CPR branchline from the mainline at Port Coquitlam served the handsome former station, which is now a Keg restaurant.
