Notch Hill

by Max Jacquiard

After crossing the Monashee mountains through Eagle Pass, Canadian Pacific's Shuswap subdivision is relatively flat to its western end at Kamloops except for a climb over the Shuswap highlands between two main arms of Shuswap Lake.  The rails climb some 600 ft. above the level of the lake to a summit at Notch Hill where a pusher station and thriving community existed until the advent of diesel-electrics in the mid-1950's eliminated the need for helper locomotives such as #5786.  The abandoned Holy Cross Catholic shurch still stands as a reminder of the little railway centered town that once existed here.
