Dave Zuest

Being the fifth of six children and the son of a farm hand, my Swiss heritage gave me thirst for the outdoors and the appreciation for wildlife and their environment.

As a youngster, many long days were spent in the South Western foothills of the Cascade Mountain Range on Sumas, Vedder and Chilliwack mountains in the lower mainland of B.C.

Results of adventuring , fishing and hunting would often mean supplying
the family meal of fish, pheasants or ducks. I had a strong desire to spend as much time as possible outdoors and planned adventures at every opportunity.

All through my teens, twenties and thirties I had a growing desire to share some of the great growing desire to share some of the great deep wilderness scenes that played themselves out while I observed undetected. The stories of adventure and danger often came while sitting around camp fires but were never recorded or expressed.

In later years I was inspired by the
soapstone carvings of my artist cousin and close friend. Once when returning from a Chilcotin hunting trip I visited my cousin and swapped a fresh mule deer carcass for some small cast off pieces of soapstone. I carved small pieces and gave them away as gifts and developed a desire to carve larger pieces.

I carve during the winter months when the farm work is done and it is too cold and wet to ride my horses.

I currently have a career with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency controlling livestock diseases and live at the base of Vedder Mountain on acreage with my beautiful and supportive wife Laurel.
